Relative clauses and the noun phrase in Cantonese

چکیده

A number of different formal analyses of relative clauses have been proposed over the years. For example, the adjunction analysis states that the relative clause is adjoined to the modified noun; the antisymmetry analysis (formulated in Kayne 1994) posits that the complementizer phrase (CP) is the direct complement of the determiner (the determiner being the head of the nominal projection), and that the NP being relativized is moved to the specifier position of the CP; yet another alternative is the small-clause analysis by Dikken and Singhapreecha (2004), which attempts to to unify the treatment of relative clauses with that of other nominal modifiers. However, to date there have been no attempts at a formal analysis of Cantonese relatives clauses, an exercise which may shed considerable light on the structure of relative clauses in general.

An HPSG-Analysis for Free Relative Clauses in German

At the moment there is no theory for free relative clauses in German in the framework of Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) (Pollard and Sag, 1994). From GB literature on the subject it is known that free relative clauses behave partly like noun phrases. They can fill argument positions of verbs. And although they are finite sentences, they are serialized like noun phrases in the Germa...

Complementiser Phrase: The Case of English Wh-Embedded Clauses

English main-clause wh-questions form complementiser phrases with wh-words preposed to spec-C position. This is because English wh-words, as verb-complements originally, are strong enough to trigger wh-movement and auxiliary inversion. Persian EFL learners encounter an over-differentiation problem regarding the acquisition of auxiliary inversion rule in English standard questions. Once they hav...

Eye movements and processing difficulty in object relative clauses.

It is well known that sentences containing object-extracted relative clauses (e.g., The reporter that the senator attacked admitted the error) are more difficult to comprehend than sentences containing subject-extracted relative clauses (e.g., The reporter that attacked the senator admitted the error). Two major accounts of this phenomenon make different predictions about where, in the course o...

Investigating Embedded Question Reuse in Question Answering

The investigation presented in this paper is a novel method in question answering (QA) that enables a QA system to gain performance through reuse of information in the answer to one question to answer another related question. Our analysis shows that a pair of question in a general open domain QA can have embedding relation through their mentions of noun phrase expressions. We present methods f...

Functional Uncertainty in the Mandarin Nominal: a Unified Analysis of Relative Clauses and Locative Structures

Bresnan's Endocentric Mapping Principles (Bresnan, 2001) are used as diagnostics to demonstrate that the Mandarin relative clause structure is an endocentric one, in which the particle de is the sole functional and c-structural head, and the modified noun is one of two specifiers. The relative clause occupies a phraseinitial specifier position associated with a Modifier DF, and the final NP occ...
